SUMMARY:SBE Chapter 37 Annual Picnic & Board Nominations
DESCRIPTION:The SBE Chapter 37 annual picnic at the WFED (formerly WTOP) historical art deco transmitter site in picturesque Wheaton\, MD will be held on Saturday September 26th\, starting at 12 noon.    \n\n\n\nThe picnic is an opportunity to meet with broadcast engineering friends along with their families\, spouses\, and significant others. As usual\, we’ll tell a few “war stories” and dine on traditional grilled picnic fare. Expect burgers\, hot dogs\, soda\, chips\, etc to be provided\, and feel free to bring something to share with your fellow engineers if you wish.  \n\n\n\nThe chapter will also start collecting nominees for the board for 2027. As you may already know\, it takes a team organize events such as this picnic\, our joint holiday party with SMPTE DC\, and the monthly meetings with guest presenters. Any and all assistance is appreciated\, so if you are interested in running for the board or just want to volunteer some time\, please reach out to one the board members for more information. \n\n\n\nOur picnic is an in-person event. We’re asking all attendees to Register Here via EventBrite (at no cost) so we know how much food to arrange for attendees. DESCRIPTION:AntennaFest is Back! \n\n\n\nJoin SBE Chapter 37\, Washington DC for AntennaFest 2026\, a full day event celebrating antenna systems\, combining\, and all things RF. \n\n\n\nAntennaFest 2025 covered many aspects of shared transmission site technology. Building on the feedback from attendees and presenters last year\, we heard there was much more to learn and people eager to continue doing so. \n\n\n\nAntennaFest 2026 is scheduled for Tuesday\, October 6th from 9 am to 6 pm at WETA Headquarters in Shirlington\, VA. Representatives from several companies will discuss varying topics including combining\, troubleshooting\, and monitoring antenna and transmission systems\, and addressing variables and constraints unique to every project. \n\n\n\nSeveral expert presenters have been lined up to educate and demonstrate solutions to common issues\, including: \n\n\n\n– Jeff Welton\, Regional Sales Manager for Nautel\, will give us a quick education on RF basics including transmitter power output (TPO)\, effective radiated power (ERP)\, line and filter loss\, antenna gain\, power handling capabilities\, and considerations to be made when broadcasting in HD before diving into site grounding best practices. \n\n\n\n– David Gates\, President and CEO of Cesium Communications\, will take us through the equipment and techniques used to generate and interpret antenna and line sweeps\, and give us some basic troubleshooting steps to help us determine if a system is functioning as intended. \n\n\n\n– Cory Edwards\, Sales Manager for Dielectric\, will highlight unique\, forward-looking antenna & combiners optimized to future proof designs and help support aging infrastructure in the broadcast industry. Leading consultants in the industry will discuss recent projects and share details from planning to the installed results. \n\n\n\n– Brian Kaplon\, Director of Commercial Sales at South-Tek Systems\, will contemplate the benefits and drawbacks pressurization with nitrogen vs dry air\, as well as touch on pressurization monitoring and tips for successful\, consistent results. \n\n\n\n– Nicholas Paulin\, Vice President\, RF Engineering at Electronics Research\, Inc. will discuss antenna pattern design as it pertains to both single frequency as well as combined antennas. \n\n\n\n– Steve Wilde\, President at SWE Services\, LLC & American Amplifier Technologies\, LLC / Shively Labs and Kathrein-Scala\, will demonstrate real-time fault monitoring & protective systems utilizing AAT’s EmPower VNA system as well as interlock best practices. \n\n\n\n– Dan Glavin\, Senior Manager\, Broadcast Business Development at American Tower Corporation\, will speak on master antenna design considerations. Topics include design criteria\, antenna\, line\, combiners\, monitoring\, tower mounting\, and measurement examples. He will also discuss the master antenna standards ATC has adopted and the operational and financial benefits of being part of a master antenna installation. \n\n\n\n– Alex Perchevitch\, President of Jampro Antennas\, Inc. will discuss the implications and effects of broadband vs full band antenna systems. \n\n\n\nWe’ll cap the day off with a discussion on AM multiplexing\, moderated by Gary Cavell\, Senior Director of the Cavell Mertz Spectrum Division of Capitol Airspace Group. Gary’s guest panelists\, including Tom King (Kintronic Labs)\, Kurt Gorman (Phasetek)\, and Ben Dawson (Hatfield & Dawson) will speak about past and current projects\, best practices\, pitfalls to avoid and considerations when co-locating multiple AM broadcasters. \n\n\n\nAfterwards\, come socialize with your colleagues at Astro Beer Hall\, just across the street from WETA Headquarters. Media entertainment/news creation is still a growing and changing field even amid industry shifts. We’ll hear local leaders’ success stories and their wise management and leadership strategies. \n\n\n\nMEDIA FORWARD presents an opportunity for industry partners to connect with a targeted group of students already interested in and receiving related secondary education instruction. The aim is to lead ambitious prospects into the future of their industry for pathways to success. Students of WKHS and influential event participants are valuable leads for sponsors. \n\n\n\nPlease join us for this meeting synchronized with the Kent County High School academic day at the student-operated radio station with both in-person and remote zoom options. With today’s widespread media consolidation\, centralization\, downsizing\, AI automation\, diversification\, and generic programming; popularity and revenue are not as they were for many classic mainstream outlets. But there are success stories nonetheless\, and much of broadcasting is not only surviving but thriving—not only in the traditional sense–but by expanding into related cross platform\, online\, and file-based technologies. \n\n\n\nWKHS is a student-operated Baltimore DMA class B1 FM station operating from Maryland’s upper eastern shore. It covers Baltimore and parts of Delaware\, Pennsylvania\, and New Jersey with a power output of 17\,500 watts. WKHS students will present the 90.5 FM formula for community connection and fiscal duty. \n\n\n\nThis Media Forward symposium includes presentations from executives of the nation’s highest billing station–WTOP news\, music centered WHFS/The GAMUT in Washington DC\, nationally recognized musicology frontrunner WXPN Philadelphia (channel share with WKHS)\, Draper Media—the resolute Delmarva media blowtorch that includes WBOC TV\, Virginia Tech’s college student run WUVT\, the innovative community positioned mid-shore NPR affiliated WHCP radio\, and multiple station owner and operator Kirk Harnack—active in national SBE and his own weekly radio technology and business podcast. Nick Langan from Radio World will add some spice to the mix. \n\n\n\nWe’ll conclude with a capstone stage show from SMPTE fellow Karl Kuhn and his Sherwood Insights training and mentorship enterprise\, aimed at visions for success in the media industry. \n\n\n\nWKHS students will assist in running this symposium\, and a few of the Tuesday presenters will have opportunities to interview live on air the day prior (Monday\, November 9th) on the 90.5 FM broadcast\, to preview and tease their presentations and give students valuable practice in their trade. \n\n\n\nStudents meet leaders of the media industry\, and they meet potential future employees: A cohort of dedicated and well-trained youngsters already running a high-powered broadcast station with two or more years’ experience in mass media operation already under their belts. \n\n\n\nMid-day lunch will be provided courtesy of the generosity of Televisa Univision\, Sherwood Insights\, and Sinclair Broadcast Group.
