The Society of Broadcast Engineers Program of Certification was adopted in November 1975, a remarkable milestone in recognizing and supporting professional excellence in broadcast engineering. To mark the occasion, the SBE has launched a program to encourage everyone to obtain or advance their SBE certification: CertChallenge.

The challenge is to take an SBE certification exam before November 30, 2026. If you do, you’ll not only take a positive step in your professional career, you will also be entered into a drawing. One person will win an upgrade to SBE MemberPlus, a free registration for the SBE Ennes Workshop at the 2027 NAB Show, a $100 Amazon gift card, and an SBE Certification and Membership pin. More details are online at sbe.org/certconnect.
The SBE offers certifications for every level of experience, from newcomers to seasoned professionals with decades in the industry. You don’t need to start at the entry level if you already qualify for a higher certification, and you don’t need to aim for the top if you’re just beginning. Once you meet the eligibility requirements for a certification, you can apply directly.

Over the years, the annual SBE Compensation Survey has consistently shown a clear trend: Professionals who hold an SBE certification typically earn more. Beyond the financial benefit, certification demonstrates to the entire industry that professional standards matter. It shows dedication, expertise, and a commitment to staying current in a constantly evolving field.

The SBE is also asking all SBE chapters to highlight SBE Certification at a chapter meeting. Called CertConnect, the SBE will provide the materials and a video for each chapter to spotlight the benefits of SBE Certification, Attendees at these chapter meetings will also earn a discount on SBE CertPreview, the SBE Certification sample test app.

With the announcement, SBE Certification Committee Chair Ralph Hogan, CPBE, ATSC3, DRB, CBNE, said, “For 50 years, SBE Certification is still the established benchmark to demonstrate broadcast technical skill. CertChallenge and CertConnect can propel SBE Certification into its next 50 years.”

As the SBE celebrates 50 years of the SBE Program of Certification, make this the year you take that next step. Whether it’s your first certification or an upgrade to the next level, commit to your professional development. Challenge yourself, grow your skills, and help strengthen the broadcast engineering community we all share.
