Anyone who manages a tower of any sort will from time to time have questions about it: Can the tower support an additional load from a new client? Can the existing mount support a heavier load from additional equipment? How is a tower analyzed? What triggers a new analysis? How does a tower get reinforced? How does damage to a foundation get addressed? How often should I inspect my tower? What type of maintenance do different types of towers require? How do I map a tower so I know where every cable goes? The list goes on and on.
Join SBE Chapter 37 in conjunction with SBE Chapter 103 (Nashville) and special guest Richard Dyer, P.E., S.E. from Morris & Ritchie Associates Inc. to get answers to some of these questions as we discuss tower and mount structural analysis, condition assessment, maintenance, drone mapping, as well as some other impactful things that would be helpful to various tower owners.
Rich Dyer has been practicing as a structural engineer with a specialization in telecommunications since 2000. Over the course of his career, he has developed deep technical expertise and a reputation for delivering complex projects with precision, reliability, and a strong commitment to public safety. From MRA’s Towson office, he manages and oversees a diverse portfolio of structural engineering projects across multiple sectors.
His work includes the design and analysis of wireless communication facilities—such as telecommunication and transmission towers, rooftop installations, water tank and light-pole attachments, and sign support structures—as well as wireless switch facilities. Beyond telecommunications, Rich’s project experience extends to bridges, buildings, and earth-retention systems, giving him a broad structural foundation that strengthens his approach to specialized engineering challenges.
Rich has extensive experience with a wide range of structural systems, including steel, reinforced and prestressed concrete, timber, masonry, aluminum, and light-gauge framing. His ability to evaluate, design, and optimize these systems allows him to support both new construction and the modification of existing structures with equal proficiency.
He earned his Master of Civil Engineering with a concentration in Structural Engineering from The Johns Hopkins University in 2008, following his Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering with a structural focus from the University of Maine in 2000. Rich is currently licensed to practice professional and structural engineering in 16 jurisdictions, reflecting both his technical qualifications and his commitment to serving clients across a broad geographic region.
Rich is an active member of several leading professional organizations, including the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE), the Structural Engineering Institute (SEI), and the American Institute of Steel Construction (AISC). His involvement in these groups helps him stay at the forefront of evolving industry standards, research, and best practices.
As is typical, the Zoom meeting will be opened early for casual conversation and socializing, with chapter business commencing at 6:50, and the presentation at 7:00, with time for questions afterwards.
